03 How the Calculation Works

The math behind every bead weight result combines two fundamental physical properties: volume (determined by the bead's shape and dimensions) and density (the stone's specific gravity). All dimensions are entered in millimetres.

Specific gravity (SG) is the density of a gemstone expressed as g/cm³. It's the most important variable in bead weight calculation — two beads identical in size but different in stone type can weigh dramatically different amounts. A graduating strand — where beads increase in size from the clasp toward the centre — is one of the most classic necklace designs in fine jewelry. It's also one of the most difficult to calculate weight for, because every single bead on the strand is a different size.

Every drilled bead loses material to the drill channel.
