03 How the Calculation Works
The math behind every bead weight result combines two fundamental physical properties: volume (determined by the bead's shape and dimensions) and density (the stone's specific gravity). All dimensions are entered in millimetres.
Millimetre dimensions are divided by 10 to convert to centimetres, and volumes are then in cm³. The weight in grams is multiplied by 5 to give carats — since 1 gram = 5 carats exactly, by international definition.
Example: a 10mm round rose quartz bead (SG 2.65) with a 1mm drill hole. Sphere volume = 523.6 mm³. Drill cylinder volume = 7.85 mm³. Net volume = 515.8 mm³ = 0.5158 cm³. Multiplied by SG 2.65 = 1.367 grams, or 6.84 carats.

Specific gravity (SG) is the density of a gemstone expressed as g/cm³. It's the most important variable in bead weight calculation — two beads identical in size but different in stone type can weigh dramatically different amounts. A 10mm zircon round (SG 4.65) weighs more than twice as much as a 10mm amethyst round (SG 2.65) at the exact same size.

07 Graduating Strand Calculations Explained
A graduating strand — where beads increase in size from the clasp toward the centre — is one of the most classic necklace designs in fine jewelry. It's also one of the most difficult to calculate weight for, because every single bead on the strand is a different size.

08 How Drill Holes Affect Bead Weight
Every drilled bead loses material to the drill channel. The Gemculator deducts this automatically using the cylinder formula (π × r² × bead span length), subtracted from gross bead volume before multiplying by specific gravity. For standard 1mm drilling, the weight reduction is under 2% — negligible for most pricing and design purposes. For large-hole beads (2mm+), the deduction becomes significant, particularly on smaller bead diameters where the drill hole represents a larger fraction of total volume. 10 Pro Tips for Accurate Results
Use Digital Calipers, Not Rulers
A digital caliper reading to 0.01mm is the single most impactful accuracy upgrade available. A 0.5mm measurement error on a 10mm bead produces roughly a 15% weight error — which compounds significantly across a full strand or a large wholesale order. Quality digital calipers are available at most US hardware stores for under $20.
Average Multiple Beads from the Same Lot
Natural gemstone beads are never perfectly uniform in size. Measure 5–10 beads from a strand and average the readings before entering them into the Gemculator. This gives you a representative weight per bead for the entire lot, rather than a figure based on whichever bead happened to land under your caliper.
Check Specific Gravity for Treated & Stabilized Stones
Heat-treated, dyed, waxed, or resin-stabilized gemstones can have a specific gravity that differs from natural stones. Turquoise is frequently stabilized with resin (lowering SG); some opals are treated with oil or smoke. When sourcing material for high-value applications, ask your supplier for the specific gravity of the actual lot rather than relying on published natural-stone values.
Rondelle Input: Thickness, Not Diameter
This is the most common data entry mistake with rondelle beads. The calculator needs the disc thickness (the narrow dimension) in the height field — not the diameter. A 12×4mm rondelle has a 12mm diameter and a 4mm thickness. Enter 12mm in the diameter field and 4mm in the height field.
